What is 5-axis Machining?

CNC Milling is a high-precision subtractive manufacturing process that utilizes computerized controls and rotating multi-point cutting tools to remove material from a solid workpiece. By following pre-programmed software instructions, our advanced milling systems can transform raw materials into complex, custom-engineered components with extreme accuracy.

At XY Machining, we utilize industry-leading CNC technology to produce intricate parts from a wide range of materials, including metals, high-grade plastics, and advanced composites. Our milling services are tailored for high-performance applications, ensuring every part meets rigorous quality standards and exact design specifications.

5-axis VS. 3-axis Machining

5-axis CNC machining is an advanced multi-axis machining process that allows the cutting tool to move across five different axes simultaneously. Unlike traditional 3-axis CNC milling, which moves along X, Y, and Z directions only, 5-axis machining adds two rotational axes. This enables the machine to approach the part from multiple angles in a single setup. With simultaneous 5-axis CNC machining, complex geometries, deep cavities, curved surfaces, and intricate contours can be manufactured with higher precision and fewer repositioning steps. This reduces setup time, improves dimensional accuracy, and enhances surface finish quality. In contrast, 3-axis machining is ideal for simpler parts with flat surfaces and basic features. However, when producing aerospace components, turbine blades, medical implants, molds, or highly contoured mechanical parts, 5-axis machining delivers superior performance and tighter tolerances. At XY Machining, we utilize advanced 5-axis CNC machining centers to manufacture high-precision components for demanding industries. Every project undergoes engineering review, DFM analysis, and strict inspection procedures to ensure compliance with ISO quality standards and exact customer specifications.

Our Capabilities

XY Machining provides advanced multi-axis manufacturing for both prototypes and production. From complex parts to finishing processes, we support complete precision builds.

Why Choose Us for Custom 5-Axis CNC Machining Services?

  • 5-axis CNC machining is built for parts that demand complex angles, sculpted surfaces, and high accuracy without the delays and risk that come from multiple setups. With advanced multi-axis programming and stable workholding, we help turn detailed CAD models into production-ready components with consistent results.

We support rapid prototypes through high-volume production, with a process designed around practical engineering: DFM feedback, smart toolpath strategy, controlled inspection, and clear communication from quote to shipment. Many 5-axis projects can be delivered using 5-axis / 3+2 machining depending on geometry, tolerance, and cost targets.

As Machined
A practical, cost-effective finish that keeps parts in their natural machined state. Toolpath marks may be visible, ideal when appearance isn’t the priority.
Bead Blasting
Creates a uniform matte texture using fine media. Great for reducing glare and visually softening machining marks.
Brushing
Adds clean, directional lines for a premium metallic look. Often used on visible components and consumer-facing parts.
Anodizing
An electrochemical coating for aluminum that improves corrosion resistance and offers color options. Ideal for durable, lightweight parts.
Hardcoat Anodizing
A thicker anodic layer designed for wear resistance. Best for industrial parts exposed to friction, sliding, or harsh environments.
Conductive Anodizing
Balances protection with electrical performance where grounding or conductivity requirements apply. Useful for certain electronics and enclosures.
Transparent Polishing
Produces a clear, refined surface for plastics where optical clarity matters. Common for display parts, covers, and visual prototypes.
Mirror Polishing
High-gloss finishing for a reflective, cosmetic surface. Used on premium parts where appearance and smoothness are critical.

Frequently asked questions

Simultaneous 5-axis machining moves all five axes at the same time for continuous contouring. 3+2 (indexed) machining locks two rotational axes in position while machining in three axes. Simultaneous machining is better for highly complex surfaces.
Choose 5-axis machining when your part includes complex curves, multiple angled features, deep cavities, or tight tolerance requirements across multiple surfaces.
Standard tolerances are ±0.005 in, with tighter tolerances down to ±0.001 in depending on part geometry, material, and design constraints.
Aerospace, defense, medical devices, automotive, robotics, and high-performance industrial sectors frequently require 5-axis machining.
Yes. Because multiple surfaces can be machined in one setup, it reduces repositioning time, improves efficiency, and shortens overall lead times for complex parts.
